Root canal treatment or endodontics is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth called the “pulp” is inflammation or infected. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection. In some cases your tooth could darken in colour, which may mean that the nerve of the tooth has died.

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, faulty crowns, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, trauma to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

The general sequence of a root canal procedure is as follows:

Step 1 Dentist will examine the tooth and x-rays before numbing the area around the affected tooth.                 After that will protective sheet called a “dental dam,” is placed over the area before injection. This will isolate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva throughout the procedure.

Step 2  When patient feel numb surrounding tissues, dentist will drill through the biting surface to the pulp area, either through the top or behind of the tooth. An antiseptic solution will be used to clean the pulp and root canals and a space is shaped for a filling.

Step 3  After the space has been cleaned and shaped, the dentist will fill the root canal with a biocompatible material. This is usually a flexible plastic material called “real seal” ensuring that the root canals are completely sealed. Normally, a temporary filling will be inserted to close the opening. The temporary filling will be removed by your dentist before the tooth is restored.

Step 4 The final visit, dentist will start the restoration work. If there is no sign of any inflammation or infection a crown or permanent filling will be inserted within a month of the root canal procedure.

Step 5 Some patient have a tooth weak for restoration in place, dentist may place a post inside the tooth before start crown.

All of the root canal treatment take about 1-3 visits

Endodontic treatment helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last as long as other natural teeth and often for a lifetime.
