Dentures
Dentures are another option for replacing lost teeth. They are removable. Additionally, dentures can help reduce or prevent deterioration that may occur in the organs related to chewing. For example, losing a single tooth can cause adjacent teeth to shift, create gaps between teeth, trap food, lead to cavities, gum inflammation, and periodontal disease.
Dentures are divided into 3 types
- A fixed denture or dental bridge typically consists of three teeth connected together, with a floating tooth (Pontic) replacing the missing tooth.
- Removable partial dentures have clasps to hold them in place. They may feel uncomfortable when worn and can accumulate food particles, leading to bad breath.
- A full denture is designed to mimic natural teeth, replacing all lost teeth. The denture base can be made from various materials such as plastic, metal, or a combination. It can also be adapted to attach to titanium dental implants, which enhance the stability of the denture.
