VENEER
What problems do dental veneers help solve?
- Helps close small gaps between multiple front teeth
- Corrects abnormal tooth shapes, such as teeth that are too large or too small
- Addresses minor misalignment issues, such as slightly crooked or overlapping teeth
- Repairs chipped or fractured teeth that don’t involve the dental pulp
- Corrects teeth with abnormal enamel surfaces
- Improves the appearance of severely discolored teeth that cannot be corrected by teeth whitening
Benefits of dental veneers
Dental veneers or facings are thin, tooth-colored materials used to cover the front surface of teeth for aesthetic purposes. They can correct abnormalities in tooth shape, gray discoloration caused by tetracycline or other stains, or damaged teeth such as chipped, cracked, or broken teeth, as well as irregularly aligned teeth.
Dental veneers involve bonding tooth-colored materials to the teeth. They can be made from two types of materials: Composite Resin and Porcelain/Ceramic. The process involves minimal preparation of the tooth enamel to allow the tooth-colored material to be bonded to the front surface of the tooth.
The unique thinness of dental veneers means that you lose very little tooth structure, while still achieving a beautiful shape and color for the treated teeth. The process is also relatively quick compared to other methods of changing tooth appearance. Dental veneers are another effective method for correcting discolored teeth to appear more natural.
Advantages and disadvantages of each type of dental veneer
COMPOSITE RESIN VENEER
Advantages
- High quality, strong, and durable
- Material that beautifully mimics natural teeth
- Less expensive than porcelain or ceramic materials
- Repairs or new composite resin veneers can be done partially with in-clinic composite resin materials, without replacing the entire veneer
- Faster treatment time compared to porcelain or ceramic materials
Disadvantages
- Material quality is inferior to porcelain or ceramic
- Over time, the material absorbs water, becoming dull, losing shine, appearing opaque, or changing color
- Less effective at masking severely discolored teeth compared to porcelain/ceramic
PORCELAIN/CERAMIC VENEER
Advantages
- Beautiful and natural-looking, closely mimicking human tooth enamel
- Strong and highly resistant to fractures
- Non-absorbent, preventing color changes and dimensional alterations
- Stain-resistant to substances like tea, coffee, soft drinks, food, and cigarettes
- Resistant to wear and scratching
- Maintains its glossy appearance throughout its lifespan
- Porcelain or ceramic veneers are compatible with surrounding tooth tissues. Tissues in contact with veneer edges remain healthy, gum tissue stays in good condition, and the smooth, polished ceramic surface doesn’t easily accumulate microbial plaque
Disadvantages
- Higher cost compared to composite resin veneers
- Treatment requires at least 2-3 visits
- Requires a highly experienced and skilled dentist
- Repairs or replacements of ceramic veneers are difficult and time-consuming
The process of treatment with ceramic veneers
- Schedule an appointment with the dentist for examination and treatment planning
- After consultation and agreement, the dentist will take dental impressions to create a wax model of the veneers’ size and shape (waxing). (For 1-2 teeth, waxing may not be necessary.) This process takes approximately 2-3 days
- The dentist will schedule an appointment to show you the wax model of each veneer’s shape and size. (At this stage, you can request adjustments to the shape and size until satisfied.) Then, the dentist will prepare the tooth surface and take impressions to send for the creation of the actual ceramic veneers. (Temporary veneers will be provided while waiting for the permanent ones.) This process takes about 7-10 days
- The veneers are bonded to the original tooth surface using a special adhesive, allowing for normal use and a confident smile
Note: For better treatment results, in some cases, the dentist may recommend teeth whitening, dental fillings, or tartar removal before proceeding with Ceramic Veneers
